Negan and Maggie's Relationship Before Dead City
NEGAN AND MAGGIES RELATIONSHIP BEFORE DEAD CITY
Negan and Maggie’s relationship before The Walking Dead: Dead City was defined by deep-seated hatred, reluctant cooperation, and uneasy tension. Their history is rooted in one of the most brutal moments in The Walking Dead—the death of Maggie’s husband, Glenn, at Negan’s hands. As the ruthless leader of the Saviors, Negan used his barbed-wire bat, Lucille, to savagely kill Glenn in front of Maggie and the rest of their group, leaving her widowed and forever scarred. This act cemented Negan as Maggie’s greatest enemy.
For years, Maggie carried her hatred for Negan, vowing revenge. Even after Rick spared Negan’s life and imprisoned him, Maggie struggled with the idea that justice had truly been served. She attempted to execute Negan herself but ultimately decided against it when she saw how broken he had become. Over time, Negan showed signs of redemption—helping Judith, killing Alpha, and proving himself useful in battle. However, Maggie was never fully convinced that he had changed.
When Maggie returned to the community after years away, she found Negan as a free man. His presence was intolerable to her, yet she was forced to work alongside him for the survival of her people. During the Reapers conflict, Negan saved Maggie’s life multiple times, but he also made it clear that he would not hesitate to betray her if it meant his own survival. Their interactions were filled with sharp words, tension, and a fragile alliance at best.
By the end of The Walking Dead, Maggie acknowledged Negan’s usefulness but remained unable to forgive him. She admitted that every time she saw him, she still thought of Glenn’s murder. Negan, on the other hand, seemed to understand her pain, offering no excuses for his past actions. As Dead City begins, their relationship remains complex—bound by shared necessity but fractured by an unforgivable past.
